Connect to Windows console using the new RDC (2.0 Beta 2)
Tagged:

Remote Desktop Connection makes you be able to connect to a Windows-based computer. If you are connecting to Windows XP, the program will automatically attach you to the console session like when you sit in front of the computer because the OS has only one session. On the other hand, Windows Server version, such as 2000 and 2003, has more than one session. The program will connect you to any available session, but not the console.

In the old version, you can add "connect to console:i:1" in to the configuration file, but the new one does not use the same format. XML format is used instead. The problem was that I could not find a way to apply this old trick to the new version.

The solution might be switching back to use the old version, but it had been written before Apple's transition form PPC to Intel began. As a result, it was slow, and crashed sometimes on my MBP, the CPU of which is Intel. After having searched for the solution on the internet, I find that the new version provides an easier way to connect to the console session by just adding "/console" to the end of the server address. For example, If your server address is "myserver.com", you just change it to "myserver.com/console".

I hope the trick will help those who are forced to use a Windows server, but fall in love with Macs.

Enjoy!

more detail?

Can you possibly add more detail about what you're trying to accomplish? I think a little introduction will make this tip much more useful to the community. Those who already get what you're doing might be able to understand this just fine, but there are those of us who don't and want to learn as well.

Cheers,
